Title: Reduction of false alarm rate of landmine detection through enhancement of user perception
Metal detectors are widely used for landmine detection in nearly 60 countries affected by anti-personal landmines. However, metal detectors give a high rate of false alarms (> 95%) due to various debris like shell fragments, bullet cases, nails, etc typically found in a battlefield. One of my former students developed a device to give a visual representation of the signal coming from the metal detector, that significantly reduced the false alarm rate. He successfully launched his own company. This project aims at investigating alternative methods to further reduce the false alarm rate.
